Poway Tournament of Champions

Last Updated: October 22, 2006

On Saturday, October 14, 2006, we hosted Poway's 14th annual showcase of bands, the biggest band event and fundraiser of the year! What made this year so special though, is that this was the first year that it became a competetive tournament. In the past, the participating bands were not given awards, but rather ranking of what the judges thought of their performance; thus forever changing the title from,"The Poway Preview" to "The Poway Invitation Field Tournament (of Champions)." Anyway, even more amazing was that we had a whooping 19 high school bands in attendance at Poway High that day, including those from our district: Rancho Bernardo, Westview, Mt. Carmel, and of course, Poway!

So hopefully by now, I've established the fact that this was a huge event. And huge undertakings require a lot of help! Hundreds of student and parent volunteers helped all day with security, parking, concessions, admissions, as well as many other jobs too numerous to list! On top of it all, no one was paid to work so it made this an even bigger fundraiser for the Poway music boosters!

Now for the tournament. All of the bands are divided into several divisions depending upon their size. We held two award ceremonies, one in the afternoon (approx. 5:15 PM) for the smaller bands (divisions 1A-3A) and one at night (approx. 9:15 PM) for the larger and most anticipated bands (divisions 4A-6A). The performances began with Monte Vista at 2:15 and ended with our performance at 8:45 PM. There was also a one-hour dinner break from 5:30 to 6:30.

And finally, the awards! CLICK HERE to see the judging criteria for the tournament. Also, note that the Emerald Brigade performed in "exhibition" which means that we were not competing to avoid any judging biases towards ourselves. Here are the winners:

Hi-light text to reveal!
General Effect Sweepstakes: Mt. Carmel
Music Sweepstakes: Rancho Bernardo
Visual Sweepstakes: Mt. Carmel and finally,
Band Sweepstakes: Mt. Carmel!

And to top it all off, a little commentary. As for Poway's performance that evening, it wasn't flawless. Our major stumble in the show was when the woodwinds and the brass were out of sync with each other during our impact point. This also created an unfortunate and obvious tear in the music. However, we still would have come in second place behind Mt. Carmel based upon the judges' scores that we recieved the next week. This means that we have great potential for taking the Sweepstakes at the upcoming Mt. Carmel tournament!

The pictures below are all of the first awards ceremony. I'm sorry that I couldn't get any shots of the main event but my day was spent volunteering at the tournament and my evening was spent in preparation for Poway's performance.
