Friday, August 31, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

The wait is over! You can view the Band Awards Night photo album under visual. You can probably expect future albums to come out on Fridays. Anyway, I thought that last night's reheasal went exceptionally well. The talking was cut down immensely and some people even started racing to see who could run back to their dots first. Progress included our first run-throughs of all 19 of our current drill sets with the Movement 0 pre-show. It's really awesome when everyone has pride in what we are doing out there...

Also, remember that call time for tonight's first football game is 5:30 PM. WATCH the drum majors and have a great first show everyone!

Here are some articles that were recently in the Poway News Chieftan:

Emerald Brigade Tunes Up For Marching Band Season

RBHS Band Gets in Step at Camp

Be sure to read up on words of wisdom from Mr. Cook as well as our leading competitor's field show. Apparently, RB will be marching at the Poway Days Parade with us as well!

Now I would like to introduce a really cool drill move that has come to be known as "The Clarinet Snake." All of you ignorant brass players probably keep hearing about this incredible feat that you cannot see. Follow-the-leader seems easy enough but add 2-count direction changes and 2-step interval spacing and that's what adds another level of difficulty to this move. Here's a drawing that I did that will better illustrate the move:

Precursor for Clarinets as Section of the Week? Definately.

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

RECALL! Sorry folks, the parade march is not "Eagle Squadron" as reported a week ago. We were not wrong, but rather the directors changed their minds. We will now be playing this march:

"The Southerner" ~ By: Russell Alexander

The only information I could dig up was that Alexander lived in the early 1900's and arranged music for Barnum & Bailey Circus. He later worked in a novelty musical vaudville act with his brothers. He is "considered a great composer of marches" (Wikipedia). Nothing specific to The Southerner or a recording could be found...

Week's up and it's time to reveal the current Mystery Song:

"The Kraken" ~ By: Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean 2)

I decided to make most every MS dark in nature this year and that's why I picked it. I though for sure that everyone would get this one, (but if you had problems playing the WMA, my apologies). Still, we had one sole winner:

Aaron W. ~ Pit Freshman

For solving the MS, Aaron will be recieving an exclusive band picture, never released to the public. You could be next if you guess this week's MS below. Buena Suerte!

Friday, August 24, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

Last night was the band's first Thursday night rehearsal of the season from 6:30 to 9:00. The band performed it's first full run-throughs of the show, marching and playing. We did a few more reps this morning during our first reheasal during school and solidifed our 12 known drill sets.

Band Picture Day is tomorrow, the call time being 7:15 AM for the group shot. Remember to get there early because I just recieved confirmation that the uniform trailer will be in the North parking lot, next to the stadium. As of right now, I do not know which picture package includes your section photo, but be sure to ask one of the photographers to make sure that you get it. Here is the list of times for tomorrow:

7:55 ~ Emerald Brigade (everyone)
8:20 ~ Senior Picture
8:30 ~ Clarinets
8:40 ~ Saxophones
8:50 ~ French Horns
9:00 ~ Trombones
9:10 ~ Tubas
9:20 ~ Percussion
9:30 ~ Trumpets
9:50 ~ Flutes
10:00 ~ Baritones
10:15 ~ Guard

Also, I would like to offer my services to anyone who wants to take a pictures with their friends, but doesn't want to pay $14 for the package deal. I would be happy to take a picture of anyone, for free! Then I will email you the picture, allowing you to print out as many as you want. See you in uniform!

I have just learned from a very reliable source that this year's parade march will be:

"Eagle Squadron" ~ By: Kenneth J. Alford

If you do not remember, we played "Army of the Nile" two years ago, also by Alford. I did my research and found out that the march was written in honor of the Royal Air Force during WWII called the Eagle Squadron. "It is also a "thank you" to the American pilots: small sections of the Star Spangled Banner can be heard in the low brass during the trio" (Wikipedia). A recording of our new march can be heard under Music!

On a side note, the band played the fight song today at the first day of school assembly in the football stadium. It was so insignificant that we did not even bother to warm-up and the seniors left us to go sit in their special designated seats. We all wore our white band polos to show our so-called "Titan Pride." Pit and Color Guard were given the option of sitting with us, even though they didn't perform. Also, the drumline performed their new drum cadence as the student body entered, though I'd be surprised if any non-band kids recognized it. And how was your day?

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

Even though Band Camp ended a day earlier this year, it was very successful. Yesterday we learned 12 pages of drill in about 2 and a half hours although did not perform it for the parents last night at the "Band Camp Blow Out" (as PHSMB.com is calling it). Based on last night's musical performance, our two areas of weakness are time and intonation. There were some major tears between the band and percussion, as well as internal rushing and dragging. Also, since this is a woodwind show, upper voices will have to be wary of pitch and brightness. And to top it all off, where is the parade march!?! Please keep checking back where we will have the latest developments on the identity of the parade music.

Well, basically you all fail, however much expected. Last week's Mystery Song was none other than the themesong from an 80's adventure TV show called, "MacGyver"! In fact, that show is what the website is named after! Still, I would like to mention that Navarre correctly guessed it. Here's this week's Mystery Song:

Just as a recap, if you know this song's title AND it source (tv, movie, etc.) please email me the answer and if you guess correctly, your name will be posted. For more info CLICK HERE.

Finally, I would like to introduce our new staff member:

Mareina ~ Photo Editor

Mariena is really cool and will be adding that little URL stamp to all of our photos. If you are interested in becoming a staff member, please read the first update made to this website. Have a good first day of school tomorrow!

Sunday, August 19, 2007 ~ Week I VIPs

Thank you for being patient everyone. Now that school is almost here, I would like to introduce a series of weekly updates that will go on through November. Normally, next you would see listed the section of the week, marchers of the week, and double of the week, but seeing as though we don't have any of those yet, let begin with our first ever "Section Leader of the Week"! (Please keep in mind that the order of the section leaders is random and has no significance.)

Leadership of the Week:
Nafisah T. ~ Pit Section Leader

(left)

EDIT: I added to this entire section because I hadn't come up with all of my ideas in August, being the first "test" LOTW. Enjoy! (11/26/07) Added 2nd Picture. (1/12/08)

Shirt Quotes: "I will devour your soul" (2006)
"I will STILL devour your soul" (2007)

Birthday: April 23

Best Quality: "people say I'm charismatic and funny...."

Advice: "It's less about the music than the attitude...no one will really put you down if you have diffuculty playing something, but they will definately get on your case for being a buttface. And besides, if you have the right attitude, you would practice more and you'd eventually get better anyway"

Leadership Advice: "It's all about balance...you have to learn when you can have fun and when you need to have focus."

What We Think: Even though you may not know her personally, Mr. Sybilski has probably mentioned Nafisah more than anyone else this year. And you know why?! Because she will shoot you down dead if you get out of line or quit band. She is one of the best mallet players in the pit and draws anime cartoons for the school newspaper. Even though people commonly associate her with darkness, death, and methods of torture, she is usually very understanding so if you ever need to talk to her, just look behind you...

Video of the Week (8/13/07)

The pit and drumline were off to a great start after practicing all summer long! (If it is not showing up, your security settings are probably blocking it!) (EDIT: 11/26/07)

Although photo albums will NOT be part of the Sunday weekly updates, I have added a few pictures from the Clarinet Section Party under Visual. Enjoy!

Sunday, August 19, 2007 ~ Navarrre

With Band Camp coming to a close, the percussion section can say it has made some excellent progress in the show so far. The percussion section has memorized the first and second movement and now is waiting for its third movement music. Monday will be the first time the percussion section will ensemble with the band on the field and maybe some of you will notice something a little different about the pit’s set-up this year. The pit has been divided into two sections: a metallic section and a wood section. These two “pods” will be placed apart from each other on the 30 yard lines with the wood section on Side 1 and the metallic section on Side 2. The wood section (pod 1) is made up of marimbas, a xylophone, and accessory parts (rack parts). The metallic section (pod 2) is composed of vibraphones (vibes), a glockenspiel (bells), chimes, and more accessory parts. It will be a very challenging dilemma for the pit to not listen to each other, but the pit will try its best to keep time inside each pod.

Every day at band camp just seems to get better and better. On the field, we learned direction change replants, hinging, as well as marching at slides. In the PAC, we did more runs of the show with better time and intonation. Overall, the day was very productive, energetic, and well-behaved. Congrats to the new freshmen (al least the clarinets) for doing so well! Here's the spirit schedule for the rest of band camp:

Thursday: Decades Day
Friday: Green & Gray Day
Monday: Sports Day

In honor of completing half of band camp, let me share the first Mystery Song ever! Here's the deal: Listen to the song below and if you know what it is, please email me the song's title as well as your name. If you get it right, your name will be posted here for all to see and you will get a prize! There will be a new mystery song whenever the song is guessed or if no one guesses right within a week. Good luck!

August 13th has finally arrived and marching band practices have become a part of everyday life again...well, that is for the band. Percussion practices started in earnest before the 2006-2007 school year came to a close. Throughout the summer, the drumline and pit have been chipping away at the beginnings of a new field show. It may not have been the most exciting thing to do over summer break, but the percussion section made a lot of progress in the show. After setting the drumline and organizing the pit, percussion ran headlong into the new music and was able to play through the opening warm-up and the first movement before the start of August. With the coming of Band Camp, the percussion section hopes to get through the second movement before the beginning of the school year. With a greatly expanded drumline (and pit for that matter) this year will prove not only to be a challenging year, but a fun one as well.

Tuesday, August 14, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

It was a great day of Band Camp, even though it may not have felt that way at the time! There was so much progress today including backwards marching, playing through the entire show, as well as a full emsemble in the PAC. Morale was higher as well. Remember that the afternoon block is now 5:30-7:30 PM and that tomorrow is Tacky Day! This is an easy one so make sure to wear something random. Also, I would like to ask you all to wait for the weekend for the bigger updates. Right now, band camp is so tiring that I barely have enough energy left to write this...

Monday, August 13, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend

Well, now that Day 1 of band camp is over, I can thoroughly say that it was exhausting. The extended hours and marching basics on the first day were a bit surprising. But, we made a lot of progress out on the field. Remember that the time blocks are from 9:00-11:30 AM, 12:30-4:00 PM, and the afternoon is still in question. Also, tomorrow is Twin Day so good luck dressing up!

Sunday, August 12, 2007 ~ macgyversfriend
