March News<<< Go back to FebruaryMonday, March 31, 2008 ~ Senior of the Week III5 Days to ItalyA new piece is set to be included in the Italy trip repitoire. Although it has not been announced, Allison L. and David H. will perform a flute duet, "Opus 2" by Johann Joachim Quantz. This three-movement piece will be placed towards the beginning of the performance. In honor of the orchestra's Festival performance this Wednesday, I have finally finished their feature page! Please click on the Orchestra tab in the right-hand column to view it! Nick A. ~ string bass, violin, viola, guitar and trombone
Birthday: December 13 Best Quality: "I'd have to say that my best quality is determination. Whatever i want, I go and get it" Advice: "My advice as for as music goes, whatever you play, just practice correctly!" What We Think: Nick is one of the most unique musicians at PHS. He has been a loyal string player in the orchestra for four years, but decided to try out the trombone last year! He also plays string bass in the Jazz Band this year and has expressed interest in studying music in college. He is our first ever string-playing Senior of the Week and we wish the best of luck to him. Friday, March 28, 2008 ~ Poway Festival News8 Days to ItalyWith Poway's Festival coming up next week, here are two new songs that have been added to Poway's lineup: An Irish Rhapsody ~ Clare Grundman (Symphonic Band) Dancing At Stonehenge ~ Anthony Suter (Wind Symphony) Symphonic Band's "An Irish Rhapsody" replaces "Knights of Dunvegan" and Wind Symphony's "Dancing at Stonehenge" replaces the "William Byrd Suite." Both songs will be very enjoyable pieces for our last performances of Festival music (not including Italy). Also, both the Perucussion Ensemble and Winter Guard have 2-day competitions coming up this weekend! The percussion will attend the San Diego Regional in Temecula and the guard will participate in the San Bernadino Regional in LA. Good luck to both groups! This time, the Percussion Ensemble's performance is fairly local so you can come see us perform live if you don't have anything planed on Saturday or Sunday. The competition is at Great Oak High School and Poway will perform at 12:50 PM on Saturday for the preliminary round. Then on Sunday, we will (hopefully) return for Finals and perform around 11:00 AM. Please email me if you would like more information about how to get there. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 ~ Italy Trip News10 Days to ItalyAnd thus the countdown begins to the 2008 PHS Tour D'Italia! Our second and final rehearsal for the trip will be today after school from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. Please make the most of our trip by attending the rehearsal! There is also a MANDATORY Italy clarinet rehearsal tomorrow at 2:30 PM, so no getting out of this one! Here is a recording to aid in your practice: Saltarello from Symphony No. 4 ~ Felix Mendelssohn
Be sure to sign up for rooming in Milan by the band room main door, as the rooms will be doubles instead of triples. The six available boy's triples have all already been filled up. Also, the percussion's "Rainbow Ripples" has been cut from the program due to time constraints. We will continue with our Italy countdown, so stay tuned! Monday, March 24, 2008 ~ Senior of the Week IINathan M. ~ Tuba
Birthday: August 3 Best Quality: "I am influential" Advice: "Look up at the lights when you march and see how awesome it is." Future Plans: "Community college then transfer" What We Think: "Nathan is an awesome Tuba player in Wind Ensemble. Why? Because he has remained loyal to the music program even though he did not make section leader this year. This is extremely commendable because it shows that Nathan thinks of the band before himself. For his senior project, he is also a partner in a middle school marching band clinic that teaches the basics of marching to incoming Freshmen." Sunday, March 23, 2008 ~ EasterThe true meaning of Easter just for you. Music makes the story so beautiful. From "An Easter Carol" by VeggieTales.
Friday, March 21, 2008 ~ Pre-Festival PhotosTwo quick updates about Italy music: 1) Unbeknowst to most, the clarinet rehearsal for Italy was moved to yesterday after school. There will not be a rehearsal today. 2) "Rainbow Ripples" may be cancelled from the performace repitoire because there is too limited time to practice. This is not 100% confirmed however... It is now 15 days until Italy and I cannot believe it!
Have you ever wondered where all of the news updates go as they get older and older? Well it has come to my attention that some of you did not realized the existence of our entire past news archive! While the links to the "Past News" pages have been at the bottom of this page all year long, I have now added a "News" header in the right-hand column that lists all months of our website annoucements (almost directly to the right of this text). Please feel free to surf the pages for any Leadership of the Week that you may have missed before or to refresh your memory of band events over the past 8 months. I have also heavily updated the "Events" in the left-hand column too. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 ~ Italy Trip NewsHere's some new information from last night's Italy trip meeting: Trip Information:

Sunday, March 16, 2008 ~ Senior of the Week IIt has been quite a while since our Leadership of the Week, but now I have organized a brand new series for the Seniors who I have not yet recognized at macgyversfriend.com. This feature is planned to go on for the rest of the year as we get closer and closer to the graduation of the Class of 2008! (P.S. If you are a Senior in the music program who would like to be featured, please email me.) Jenna M. ~ Flute (center)
Birthday: July 5 Best Quality: "I like to make people happy" Advice: "Practice, Practice, Practice" Future Plans: "go to BYU Idaho and major in Elementary Education" What We Think: "Jenna is a generally quiet person who can often be found amongst the circle of her many, many friends. As one of the top Senior flutists at Poway High, currently in Wind Ensemble, we believe that she will be successful in any career when working with others." (Note: I officially ban the term "flautist" from ever being used on this and future websites ever again. There's no such thing as a "flaut.") Friday, March 14, 2008 ~ New Photo Album!
Speaking of looking great, don't you just love this month's St. Patrick's Day headbanners? I spent quite a while on this set of graphics to get them just right. And I almost forgot, here are the performance times for El Camino: Friday (today)Symphonic Band @ 11:30 AM Saturday (tomorrow)Wind Ensemble @ 4:00 PM (Call Time: 2:00 PM) Good luck and have fun everyone! Wednesday, March 12, 2008 ~ Festival/Italy MP3sHere are the rest of the of the professional recordings of Poway's Festival pieces this year! Believe it or not, I found ALL of these recordings either online or from Mr. Sybilski. As you prepare for the El Camino Festival this weekend, try to listen for dynamics, articulations, phrasing, tone, etc. that you can work on! Knights of Dunvegan ~ Symphonic Band (4:08) Of A Distant Star ~ Symphonic Band (3:33 sample) Symphony No. 8 ~ Symphony Orchestra (4:08) William Byrd Suite ~ Wind Symphony (4 out of 6 Mvts.)
It was recently announced that the following Festival pieces will make up the repertoire for the band's trip to Italy in April. Marchissimo ~ Concert Band (4:34) Adagio ~ Concert Band (4:41) Spirit of the Pioneers ~ Wind Ensemble (5:34) For those of you who are going to Italy, there will be two rehearsals after school on Wednesday, March 19 and 26, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. They are not mandatory but it is a dissapointment to me that so many students have told me that he or she is "too busy" to attend. If you want Poway to sound great in Italy, BE THERE. I think this is a great lineup that is challenging for some, and will most definately impress the Italian students. In addition, the repertoire will conclude with the following American march: The Stars and Stripes Forever ~ John Phillip Sousa (3:41) Wednesday, March 5, 2008 ~ Festival MP3sSo if you missed Pre-Festival last week, I have obtained some of the professional recordings of Poway's musical arrangements this year for your listening pleasure! You can use these recordings to aid in your individual practice as well. Please check back later today for an orchestra piece. Anthem for Winds and Percussion ~ Symphonic Band (5:06) Foundation ~ Wind Ensemble (11:25) Kingsbridge Overture ~ Concert Band (7:23) Aerodynamics ~ Wind Symphony (8:25) Russlan and Ludmilla ~ Symphony Orchestra (5:03) The additional selections(s) from each ensemble will be featured next week so check back then! Saturday, March 1, 2008 ~ Winter Guard PageIn honor of the Winter Guard's first big competition, the San Diego Regional, here is their page for 2008! Just click on the "Guard" button in the right hand column to read about their current show and listen to their music! Today's performance will be in the the preliminary round, and tomorrow's will (hopefully) be in the finals! Good luck! Just as equally important, today is the Concert Percussion Ensemble's first show at Artesia High School! They will perform about 2/3 of their show at 4:20 PM. With a two-hour drive to Artesia HS, this will be an all-day event. Just a reminder, you can click on the "Percussion" tab in the right hand column to read more about their show. Good luck to them as well! <<< Go back to February
