November News
Wednesday, November 28, 2007 ~ News
Although it seems strange, some of you guys still do not realize that the words: Visual, Music, Effect, Band, etc. to left of this paragraph are links to more parts of the website! (In January, the right-hand column links will also be used...maybe.) Also, I have listed the categories in the red text just above if you still cannot find these pages.
Sadly, it's time to reveal our 15th and final Mystery Song :
God Help the Outcasts (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) ~ By: Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz
Although I haven't seen "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in years, this song blew me away when I rediscovered it. The song is sung primarily by Esmeralda who sings of her sympathy for the hunchback, Quasimodo. The second half of the song then expresses Esmeralda's selfless love and concern for her people, Gypsies who are outcast from society. It is not as dark as the other fourteen Mystery Songs, but this music captures a sorrow that touches the soul. Truly, Alan Menken's music was the key to "Hunchback" and many of Disney's other successful animated movies in the 1990s.
This concludes our series of Mystery Songs 2007. Until next year, you can re-listen to all 15 HERE or under the "Music" category. And don't worry because our music collection will continue to grow all year long!
Lastly, here's a new video and and pictures from the Poway Chieftan:

Sunday, November 25, 2007 ~ Week XV Leadership VIP
If you haven't found out yet, Poway beat El Camino at last Friday's football game, 55 to 6. More importantly, this means that we will be performing the field show for sure next friday, November 30! I am sure that you are just as exited as I am because this also means that Poway is one win away from playing at Qualcomm on December 7! "The Tell-Tale Heart" hasn't beat it's last low, dull, quick sound yet!
Shirt Quote: "Keep the Commis out of Poway."-Champ
Birthday: December 3
Best Quality: "i try to be friends with everyone"
Advice: "if you plan to do well you have to want to get better"
Leadership Advice: "not everyone will respect you but it is possible to gain their respect as long as you dont give up on them."
What We Think: Chris is a true saxophonist on many different levels, making him perfect for the job. He is known for his fun and outgoing nature and has lots of fun with his section (as you can see on the left). You may have even seen him step-dance as "Tommy Titan" in this year's Titan Times skit! Be on the look out for this sax-playing senior!
Thursday, November 22, 2007 ~ Thanksgiving Gifts
As you view the updated schedule of events (on the left) you are in for a surprise. It turns out that we have an additional football game on Friday! It will be a pep band only, but everyone is invited to play in the stands with a 6:00 PM call time. Then, if the football team continues their amazing winning streak, we will perform the field show at the November 30 game, and possibly even at Qualcomm on December 7! I am very exited for a possible revival of "The Tell-Tale Heart!"
In honor of the holidays, I decided to serve up literally a parade of gifts for everyone! First off, I have added November graphics to the side and headbanners, similar to the way we did last month. This week's photo album is one of my personal favorites, the Mission Hills MBOS . Page 2 is coming next week. Finally, I must wrap up the "Live Recordings" section, as featured under Music . Please enjoy these final recordings from our last rehearsals before Arcadia!
It's time to reveal last week's Mystery Song :
M.I.B. Main Theme (Men In Black) ~ By: Danny Elfman
If you've ever listened to Danny Elfman music (Spiderman, Batman, etc.) you should have recognized some key musical elements in this track: furious strings, rich brass chords and bell tones, and tons of synthesized sound effects. Elfman is well known for his dark scores and provides a bold and driving opening for "Men in Black." This movie really is a must-see because it has the best of everything: actors, script, plot, music, CG, originality, and most importantly, style. It even earned a 10 by my own movie rating system!
Anyway, here is the 15th and final Mystery Song of the year. It is your last chance to win the gift of memories from me, so I am looking forward to your emails! I promise that this song will warm your heart, so please feel free to listen to it over and over again...

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 ~ Week XIV VIPs
Wow, what an exiting and magical ending to a successful season! I think that many people would agree that this was a very special Arcadia Tournament in comparison to those past. Although I cannot be sure, the emotions of this tournament may have even surpassed the legendary "Circuitry" show in 2004 for some seniors. We had very good runs of both the parade and field show despite our tough competiton this year. Here were the scores from Saturday:

Section of the Week: Clarinets (3rd Time!)
Notes: In honor of being the third and final win for the clarinets, here is the clarinet section of 2005! It was originally meant to go up on the 2005 Site but I never had the opportunity to release it. Congratulations Class of ' 08!
Leadership of the Week:
Roblen G. ~ Librarian (left)
Shirt Quote: "I'm not short, I'm vertically challenged!"
Birthday: March 14
Advice: "There are three key things to marching band: hard work, dedication, and fun :D"
Leadership Advice: "One thing I think is that leaders should be friendly with their section, because that will gain them respect. I know that it has been said "our job is not to make friends" and all that, but I really think that's wrong and it's important to get along with everyone in the section."
What We Think: Roblen is a very talented and caring individual of the Class of '09. As the librarian, she has one of the few leadership positions whose resposibilities will continue for the entire year! She plays clarinet in Wind Symphony, however, will be playing piano for her third year in this year's musical, "The Music Man." Plus, Roblen is an excellent student whose priorities are grades, but can still find time to laugh and relax. We believe in Roblen and support her as she would do the same for just about anyone.
Marchers of the Week:
Clarinets ~ Aubrey R. (right)
So sadly, these are the last of the VIPs of the week but the "Leadership of the Week" is planned to continue throughout January. I hope that you enjoyed this segment of the website and would appreciate any feedback or comments that you would like to email me !
Thursday, November 15, 2007 ~ Arcadia & Media of the Week
Before we get to the media, I would like to say a few words regarding the upcoming weekend:
As a junior, this will be my third trip to the (54th) Arcadia Festival of Bands and it always makes me proud to be attending with such a fine group. And what makes this year even more exciting, is that we really have a professional, competitive show that the judges can really get into. I think that we all had a little skepticism about "The Tell-Tale Heart" in the beginning, but it has turned out to be better than ever.
Not that you really need reminding, but over the next three days, make sure to think about dynamics (ffff!), impact points, controlled sound, intonation and tone, watching the drum majors, horn moves/angles, recent additions to the show, and making every step look great! As the directors say, "How you rehease is how you will perform." As for parade, just do your best to remember about dynamics, sustaining phrases, where you are playing or not playing, etc. Make our rehearsals count!
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who have contributed to this website in any way. Although it has been tough to recieve support from the Music Boosters and a larger number of students, I feel that it is important to continue what I now consider a tradition. Please keep checking back for more updates as we head into the holiday band events and possibly an extended marching season, with the football team doing so remarkably well! I am proud to be your webmaster and a member of the Emerald Brigade. There is no doubt that we will put on a show to remember for years to come. And after, see you at Disneyland!
Sincerely, Joshua H.
P.S. You will find out who "Mareina" is in about a month from now...
Here's EVERYTHING that you might need for this weekend, however you should try to pack as light as possible! Please email me if you think I forgot something!

It's time to reveal last week's Mystery Song :
The Birth of the Twins/Padmé's Destiny (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) ~ By: John Williams
Yes, this was one of the lesser appreciated Star Wars tracks, but I wasn't just going to give you the main themes! Those would have been a dead give away! Plus, I wanted to let you listen to the choral arrangements that have been used more and more in the second trilogy. I wasn't really expecting you to get the exact scene, but at least that it was Star Wars: Episode 3. We did not have any new winners, but I would like to personally thank
Emily C. ~ Clarinet Freshman
for continuing to guess at the mystery songs, making this one her third correct guess! Also, please be patient MS winners, your prizes are coming soon. With only two more left, here is MS #14:
And here's a hint: The year 2007 marks the 10-year anniversary of the action, comedy, and out-of-this-world movie that this music comes from. Good Luck!

BAND - 94.35 El Dorado
Our biggest win of the evening was for our Percussion who miraculously brought home the top award! I also think that it is a good sign that came within mere points of our competition even with a terrible run of the field show. So now that we know what NOT to do, I an grealy looking foward to a successful Arcadia performance.
Section of the Week: Trumpets
Because this is the second SOTW for the trumpets, here is their official band photo in low resolution as seen in the PIFT program! Since nobody submitted a scan of the real one, this is all I had. So now, the only section left is the Flute Section. Will they be able to get their act together for the last week of our 2007 Season?
Speaking of official band photos, I would like to create a page with a collection of all of them to be archived online for all time. In past years, my attempts to create this page have all failed because NO ONE would take the time to help me out! See? This a repeat message from last week because absolutely no one submitted anything yet! As your faithful webmaster, I ask you to take a few minutes to HELP ME!
If you send me a scan of your section photo(s), you will be recognized on this website forever! I still need the color guard, french horn/mellophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, saxophone, tuba, leadership, and senior official photos taken on that day. If you bought any of those, I want them! To show your support for this website, please do the following:
1. Wipe your photo(s) clear of any dust
2. Scan your photo(s) in the computer (at 300 ppi, if possible)
3. Email your photo(s) to macgyver@pacbell.net
If you do not have a scanner but would still like to contribute, please talk to me at school. When I recieve your photo(s), your name will be emblazoned as the donater of your section photo, for all time! Don't think that another person in your section will do it for you either because as of right now, I have a grand total of 2 submitted photos.
Leadership of the Week:
Emily M. ~ Clarinet Section Leader
(left)
Shirt Quote: "Don't put twinkies on your pizza."
Birthday: June 14
Advice: "Have fun and appreciate what you have. (especially being part of the most awesome marching band ever!!!)"
Leadership Advice: "If you truly respect those you are working with and leading, they will respect you. Stay true to yourself and who you are."
What We Think: There are many things that come with the position of leadership, including power, authority, responsibility, prestige, and a shirt. But the one misinterpreted quality is respect. Unlike the others, respect is something that must be earned and cannot be obtained by pursuing it. This is why Emily has always been a great leader. She is devoted, talented, and enthusiastic and her peers respect her for it. Most of all, she puts others before herself and understands their feelings. Outside of band, Emily has also stared a Sign Language Club on campus and wants to become a history major in the future. I respect Emily M. and thank her for being a supportive leader and friend to all bandkind.
Marchers of the Week:
Clarinets ~ Steven L. (left)
Clarinets ~ David C. "Froshmore" (right)
Saturday, November 10, 2007 ~ Vista & New Features
Today is the Vista Tournament which will once and for all prove how much we are worth. We will finally be pitted against Rancho Bernardo, Mt. Carmel, and now, El Dorado who took the Sweepstakes at the recent Mira Mesa Tournament. I am sure that the Awards Ceremony will be very exiting this year, but before that, let's talk seriously.
Recently, there have been discussions about the problems on the bus ride to Mission Hills last Saturday. There were problems with trash left on the buses, misbehavoir, and overall abuse of the privileges that we are provided with. The directors and parents are serious about completely obliterating our trip to Disneyland if behavoir on this trip does not improve. That would pretty much be the worst fate to end up with, and especially heartbreaking for Seniors. I strongly encourage everyone to monitor yourselves as well as others. REMIND your friends of the CONSEQUENCES! We can do better.
On a lighter note, here is a checklist of what to bring to Vista:
Your Instrument!
Black Gloves , Shoes, Socks, Shirt, Shorts, etc.
Black EB Jacket
Warm clothes, blanket, etc.
Secret Pal Stuff!
Cell Phone, music player, camera, etc.
Extra reeds
All pit auxiliary items
Comb, brush, hair ties, etc.
House key
Believe it or not, here comes our 14th photo album: Homecoming , which includes photos of the parade during school, as well as the football game. Also, here's a thank you to Mrs. Dolan for donating 4 pictures to this album.
Although the Vista Tournament is a short one, I am sure that we will have a great performance. Remember to push air through crescendos and impact points while staying in control of quality, tone, and pitch. We are going to beat RB at their own game...
Wednesday, November 7, 2007 ~ Media of the Week
It's time to reveal last week's Mystery Song :
Grim, Grinning Ghosts (Disney's Haunted Mansion) ~ By: Buddy Baker, Lyrics By: X Atencio
Our sole winner was:
Jodi S. ~ Junior Color Guard
Orginally, I had planned to use a song from "Les Meserables" but I liked this one better for Halloween and because of our Disneyland trip. Although this is the audio to the "Haunted Mansion," Jodi reminded me that this was NOT the name of the song, but instead "Grim, Grinning Ghosts"! The track opens with the dialogue as heard at the beginning of the ride, goes into a waltz version of the main theme, and concludes with "GGG" as heard in the graveyard.
"One of the more interesting audio tracks playing is a four-part ensemble of harp, trumpet, bagpipe, and flute which were recorded playing a reversed version of the score. This recording is played backwards, so while the melody is accurate to the song, and synchronized with the rest of the tracks, the sound has a particularly jarring quality" (Wikipedia). Make sure to listen for this very strange, awesome melodic line when you are on the real ride!
As of right now, I only have plans to do 3 more mystery songs so that means you only have 3 more chances to get free pictures from me! Good luck...

Notes: This week we have a surprise! Thanks to Rachel P. we have a recording of last Friday's runthrough, just before the tournament. Lower and higher quality versions of this video can be found under "Effect." (EDIT: 11/26/07)
Picture of the Week (11/3/07)
Notes: Here's a picture of Melanie and Chad from Saturday. In this picture, I decided to frame the subjects on the left instead of in the center. I think that it makes the picture more interesting to view, so watch out for variations in framing in future photo albums!
Monday, November 5, 2007 ~ Week XII VIPs
Before we get to the VIPs, here were the tournament results from Saturday:
Prelims (Sapphire Class)
83.10 Poway
High Music - Poway
High Visual - Poway
High Effect - Poway
Finals
85.25 Poway
79.95 Aliso Niguel
76.30 Mission Hills
75.25 Tesoro
71.15 Moorpark
68.50 Ramona
High Music - Poway
High Visual - Poway
High Effect - Poway
Even though it was probably unfair that we were double the size of most bands out there, it was nice to bask in the glory for our first tournament!
Section of the Week: Clarinets!
Because this is the second SOTW for the clarinets, here is their official band photo in high resolution! So now, the only section left is the Flute Section. With only two weeks left to go, will they be able to pull off a win?
Speaking of official band photos, I would like to create a page with a collection of all of them to be archived online for all time. In past years, my attempts to create this page have all failed because NO ONE would take the time to help me out! See?
But now, I would like to give you a chance to become a star! Just send me a scan of your section photo(s) and you will be recognized on this website forever! I still need the color guard, french horn/mellophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, saxophone, tuba, leadership, and senior official photos taken on that day. If you bought any of those, I want them! When you scan me your photos, please do the following:
Thank you!
Leadership of the Week:
Melanie S. ~ Secretary (left)
Shirt Quote: "Berries, berries and what else?"
Birthday: October 23
Best Quality: "Caring"
Advice: "Always keep a positive attitude no matter how you are feeling, because it rubs off on people."
Leadership Advice: "Set a good example, and focus on your job and your business."
What We Think: Melanie = Charisma. There's no question that Melanie's got the lines, the style, and the spunk. You can always be at ease around Melanie, but be prepared for her unique form of angry, witty sarcasm! As secretary, Melanie is in charge of taking attendence for 250 students everyday and writing up the announcments about upcoming events. With two years of experience, she is very good at what she does. Probably her most important quality, though, is loyalty to her friends (as pictured above). She has been known to always support her friends in the toughest of times, and they do the same. We love you Melanie!
Marchers of the Week:

Friday, November 2, 2007 ~ MBOS & New Features
Hooray! With our first competition at Mission Hills tomorrow, marching season is officially under way again! I am very excited for a day filled with fun, music, great performances, and hopefully, some 1st places! When you're packing, remember these things:
Your Instrument!
Black Gloves , Shoes, Socks, Shirt, Shorts, etc.
White EB Polo
Black EB Jacket
Secret Pal Stuff!
Cell Phone, music player, camera, etc.
Water & change of clothes for morning rehearsal
Money/Sack Lunch
Extra reeds
All pit auxiliary items
Stuff to do on the bus
Comb, brush, hair ties, etc.
House key
Although being held at Mission Hills Hight School, this tournament is run by the Winter Guard Association of Southern California and is called the "Marching Band Open Series" (MBOS). Unlike the SCSBOA tournaments, the MBOS division pits all bands of all sizes against one another.
Anyone can win, but they must get through both a preliminary round and a final round. This year, only six bands will make it to the finals. There are no "Sweepstakes" awards, so 1st place literally means 1st place! They also have High Music, Visual, and Effect Awards. To top it all off, the judging is different at this tournament. There will be judges in the press box, as well as judges on the field looking at individual technique.
Launch Video
Because we are the biggest band performing there tomorrow, I know that we want to win the most. Good luck and make tomorrow a day to remember! (EDIT: 11/26/07) If everything goes as planned, it sure will for me...
Wow! After all that, we still have some new features! First is the Rehearsals ~ Page 2 photo album which includes more moving GIFs! Next are some of the most recent recordings of the parade march and field show, featured on the Music page. And don't worry, it will load super fast now that I have removed some of the embeded sound clips from that page. I love our show this year and we need to prove ourselves to the world. I will be looking for some great pictures tomorrow as well! Have fun!
