Percussion Ensemble

Concert Percussion Ensemble is one of the most recent addtions to the Poway Music Program. In 2007 it replaced Poway's "Winterline" show, which was made up of a marching drumline and pit. While this new format does away with the marching, it allows the group to focus much more on musical detail and growth. Instrumentation consists of keyboard instruments (marimba, vibraphone, etc.), drums (drum set, timpani, etc.), and accessories. In addition, this ensemble is much less costly and time-demanding than Winterline, giving more students an opportunity to participate. Plus, the Percussion Ensemble has been very sucessful in competition, consistently placing in the top of their class.

This year, the percussion ensemble has nearly doubled in size this year with a total of 16 students. Our Seniors this year are Nafisah T and Rachel P. The Juniors include Keenan W, Nick M, Joshua H, Amanda L, and Schae B. The Sophomores consist of Nick C, Phillip L, Kyle N, and Maegan C. And last but not least, our Freshmen include Josh C, Chris B, Shunto I, Drew G, and Jeremy H. Also, the group is run by directors Doug Crooks and Paul Casey.

Their 2008 music is entitled, "Heat of the Day" adapted for percussion by Andrew Beall and originally composed by the Pat Metheny Group. The original length of the piece was 5 mintes, but with a few additional cuts, Poway's show now runs at 4 minutes, 20 seconds. You can listen to the different versions below:

(5/30/08): I now present the Heat of the Day photo album! It includes various pictures of the Percussion Ensemble over the last four months, our two official photos, as well as 12 shots taken by my sister, Kristina! Be sure to check out our 2008 Videos for more of the Percussion Ensemble if you haven't done so already. Enjoy!

(4/21/08): Here are the results from the Concert Percussion competiton on Saturday:

1. Garfield - 92.7
2. Poway - 87.8
3. Mission Hills - 83.3
4. Santiago - 80.7
5. Ramona - 73.6
6. Dana Hills - 70.2

So, despite many challenging circumstances, the Percussion Ensemble pulled off a decent performance on Saturday! On Friday, I was very apprehensive about our show but coming in 2nd place just goes to show that anything can happen. I would like to encourage my fellow Percussion Ensemble members to practice as much as possible this week and to stay focused on the goal of a great last performance. Good luck at Championships on Saturday, April 26!

(4/3/08): Here's what one reviewer though of the Percussion Ensemble's performance at the WGI Regional: "Split sixteenth note passages and unsettling passages were a central motif in Poway’s program, In the Heat of the Day. The ensemble constantly utilized its skilled front ensemble, taking a sixteenth note run and passing along through the various instruments with a sense of grace and ease. Given the title of the show and the various and aggressive mood changes, one might imagine the music as a reflection of the mental state of a person caught in the middle of a vicious heat wave. The ensemble juggled fierce rudimentary and rhythmic passages with an equal display of melodic content. Opposed to ending on a grandiose note, however, the ensemble’s masterful command of dynamics and nuance reflected that of the descending sun on a hot summer’s day. One by one each timbre weaved itself out of the musical tapestry, until all that was left was silence."-Alex Mendoza

(3/30/08): Poway took 3rd place out of 3 with a score of 79.5. Although last, the ensemble felt content with their exceptionally improved performance.

(3/1/08): Just as equally important, today is the Concert Percussion Ensemble's first show at Artesia High School! They will perform about 2/3 of their show at 4:20 PM. With a two-hour drive to Artesia HS, this will be an all-day event. Just a reminder, you can click on the "Percussion" tab in the right hand column to read more about their show. Good luck to them as well!

(2/24/08): Since today is our first "Judges Training" unofficial performance, I now present the percussion ensemble page for 2008! Please check back for event and show updates!
